If it's lead-acid, you could hack the top-off and connect the output to cell 4 or 5, and see if 8 or 10 will do?

If you're trying to replace 6 - 1.5 volt cells in series the that would be 9 volts.  You can use a 9volt voltage regulator that will drop the 3-4 extra volts.  Some batteries like a car battery may be 13-15 volts when fully charged.

If you're using much current you'll need to heatsink it.

Google "voltage regulator".  I "think" the chip you need is an LM7809.  But I might have the number wrong since I don't use regulators much.  I use a variable power supply then build my power supply to match what I need.
