How can i get started in electronics, to someday build the cell phone that i've designed? Answered

The question above says it all.

I could also use a Gumstix Fire along with some other components, and a custom PCB.

Designing a cell phone usually requires expertise from a number of different disciplines, all of which requiring at least a B.S., and probably a Master's.

Is it specifically the electronics that you want to build, or the case?  Maybe the user interface?  Or the operating system?  Heck, the antenna alone requires a separate designer these days.

I suggest you narrow your scope and decide exactly what part of the design process appeals to you the most.

As KMH says but add
......and lots and lots and lots and lots of high powered mathematics. And then some more.

Electronic design is not sticking other people's bits together in aesthetically pleasing ways.

Look up your local community college on the Web (search "community college, <your town>, <your state>").  Enroll in a couple of basic electronics courses.  When you finish those, enroll in some more advanced electronics courses.  Transfer from the CC into a nearby four-year college as an electrical engineering major.  Once you get your B.S. in EE, then you should know enough to actually be able to design (and build) a cell phone.

Can't beat that description.

Education.  Pure and simple.  You can do it yourself as a hobbyist, but it'll be nine million times harder without proper instruction.

And once you get there, most employers want to see the paper you get for all that education.  Very few real opportunities out there for a self educated electronics guru.
