How do I make small amounts of Hydrogen by reacting Mg and HCL. ? Answered

I know how to drop the acid and collect the gas, but my question was "what proportions of acid to Mg?" Thanks

Most combinations of metal and acid will produce hydrogen gas, at varying rates (copper and lead are too slow to be useful, calcium could be dangerously fast). Avoid using iron filings, though, because they also produce bad smells, especially with sulphuric acid.

A typical set up is to place the metal (Zinc works too) in a round flask, which has a dropping funnel (it's got a tap on it) poked through a bung sealing the flask. Also poked through the bung sealing the flask is a glass tube, out of which you can collect the gas you produce. Add dilute acid to the funnel and open the tap, acid drips on to the metal and produces gas.
For collection you run the tube into a tank of water and collect in e.g. an inverted (water-filled) test tube. If you've produced H2 electrolytically this bit should be familiar.
