How to Avoid the Red Ring of Death, and other Xbox 360 Problems
I don't have an Xbox 360, and I probably never will, but for anybody who owns one, their worst nightmare is the Red Ring of Death. There are several causes for the Red Ring of Death, this forum topic is here for people to post how they have managed to avoid it and other 360 problems, including overheating. If I get enough ideas, I may post a Collaboration. If you post an idea, make it as detailed as possible, and if you can, with pictures.

I'm on a mac, but I do own a couple great windows machines, it's how you use them, when windows is first installed, it doesn't usually ever bsod does it? Usually that happens when the user gets..modifying things..

Yes, I don't know how it (xp) was when it first came out as my first experience of it was in 2003, but since I got more computer literate I tried things out (mainly on the main family computer) and I got a few BSoD's now and then, but since I've had my own laptop, as I'm using Omega drivers for the ATi gfx card, I have a few tools which are only meant to be for Desktop computers and make it crash. =) but I like Windows Xp, it's nice and (relatively) small OS.
If your a John_Doe then you'll probably never experience a BSoD. :-| :)

I've had more BSoD's than you probably ever have, and btw, the Omega drivers aren't that great from what I've experianced, the main ati drivers on the ATI site seem to give the best performance.

well I guess the reason why I switched was because I got the drivers from the laptop manufacturer website, not ATi directly, so I don't know whether their version was old or what. but when I first tried Omega I'm pretty sure it was a little bit better. =)

Well perhaps omega just doesn't mingle well with certain chipsets as that's entirely possible why it sucked for me. If you really wanted to see what got you more fps in game I would download 3D mark 02 or 03 or the newest one if your card is able to handle some intense shit and benchmark it with the different drivers. I did that and the omega drivers were 5-7 fps slower in most of the tests.

My X-box red ringed right before Mass Effect came out. Because it takes a month to fix, I should get it back in a week or so. It crashed at the absolute worst time! All the new stuff came out! :(

Yeah. The 360, aside from the RROD, is much better than the 360. Those reasons include more games in the library.

i thought the Red ring of death was like the chiken pox of 360s, all of em get it sooner or later.
Reply 13 years ago
Not all, the 360 does have a 30% failure rate though.
Reply 11 years ago
hey just put it in an open area and give it a break every once in a while. if you do get it, just send it to micorsoft to get it fixed for free (if u have warrenty).

Here's a heads up. When you get a 360, always keep it laid on it's side. Everyone I've talked to who has done this has NEVER had a RrOd.

The towel trick is dangerous as it can damage your console with the heat it generates. Take a look at the article below which has a link to a proper fix which you can do at home and it's safe and permanent.

I just put a small fan pointed at my 360 whenever I play. Keeps it cool and never freezes on me and has yet to RR me. Also give your 360 some break go to the outside world and let your 360 take a break.

buy a small computer fan , than rig it up to a stand and a power supply and it should cool the xbox OR if your rich you could invest in a 3rd party cooling system that attaches to the bottem of the xbox ( they also come withe some cool extras - EB games\ games stop )

I heard the towel trick works well once you get it ;-)
you can use the towel trick to make it work temporarily. On a different website someone said they left it like that for an hour and never experienced the ring of death again.

That is sweet! Yeah, the comments say that is remelts some connections back together. I suppose if you left it on long enough, like that guy you said, it would melt it all back together again. Eventually, though, it might just melt it off again, but then I suppose you can just do the trick again.

AH ! That's funny ... =o]
Microsoft gave us nightmares with the Blue Screen of Death, and now, they doing it with a Red Ring .................
Was the previous Xbox subject to a "something" of Death too ?
