How to do a hollywood style explosion
Hey, dose anyone know how to do a Hollywood style explosion. Sort of like the ones in Monty Python and the Holy Grail where there is a large fireball. I have heard of taking a plastic soda bottles and filling them with gas, but I was not very fond of this idea.

Depending on what types of explosives you have access to I can give you a few good ideas.

Primary explosive, gunpowder works but det. Chord is better, wrapped around plastic jugs full of gasoline. If you're using a solid mass of explosives instead of one that can be wrapped around the jugs, place it in the center of each jug. This will give a massive fireball and fairly good pressure wave.

I know that to create the "wall of fire'' type explosions you see at airshows, they use dynamite and gasoline--the dynamite creates the heavy "thud" sound, and the gasoline makes the giant fireball. Just be careful, gasoline vapor is more flammable than you might think.

No they dont... They use an acetylene mortar and a pipe pressurized with a JP fuel and Gasoline mix. The pressure is released in time with the acetylene mortar and Boom....simulated Napalm strike...this was done in a massive scale for the movie Apocalypse Now.

Flammable? More like explosive. I have seen hot embers put out by the liquid portion of gasoline, but I have also seen the fumes ignited by a static spark off a carpet blow a person over onto their back. Gasoline is only safe as in "internal" fuel in an internal combustion engine. And outside it can be very unpredictable. The breeze will carry fumes in an unexpected direction; you light a match or lighter and Fa-rooom; you have no skin. Too many people are injured each year starting garbage burning fires using this fuel.

For a nice big woosh fireball, I'd fill a plastic bag or large balloon with flammable gas (butane from a blowtorch, propane from a BBQ tank or methane from the mains), and tape a length of nichrome wire to the outside - connect the nichrome to a large battery, it gets hot and woomp!
For a bit extra colour in the flame, try a small splash of petrol into the bag first.
If the wire just melts the bag or bursts the balloon without lighting the gas, try again with one of those "electric matches" that they use to ignite model rocket motors.

I have done experiments with flour before, and I found it kind of unpredictable, but I can try Cremer. A balloon filled with propane sound like it would work I will give it a try also.

You can do a propane fireball by using a 5 gallon metal bucket. Simply drill a hole, thread in a spark plug for ignition. Drill a second hole for your propane torch nozzle to fit in. I may take some trial and error to figure out how long to leave the valve open to get the proper amount of gas in there. Step back and apply juice to your spark plug and boom. If it is windy tape a piece of tissue paper over the top. For visual effect the creamer looks best. Another method for a creamer fireball is to use a large squib charge in a tube filled with the creamer and some flash powder or powdered aluminum. It is way more involved, but I have done it and it is a stunning effect. I have done the funnel/creamer effect for a outside haunted attraction once(it was reminiscent of the scene from the Holy Grail you speak of) . Reset time was less than 5 minutes for 10 of them and was repeated 20 times that night. A truly stunning effect and it shoots up about 8-10 feet depending on what psi you charge your actuator to.

. In my experience, for fireballs, butane works better than propane and propane works better than methane (natural gas to us Yanks). For explosive effect, reverse the order.

Extract the hydrogen out of water, put it in a balloon. Wire up a circuit and then hit it when you are ready.

That's a big bang, but not much fireball.

It was pretty firebally when I did it =O

Attach a funnel to an air hose. Fill the funnel with powdered coffee creamer. Light a propane torch and place the nozzle 6 to 8 inches above the funnel. Attach the hose to an air compressor. Open the valve when ready. The Creamer is powdered fat and when it is aerated and exposed to flame or spark it ignites in a huge fireball. Nice thing is it is easily recharged and ready to go in minutes and is not as much of a fire hazard as it is using flammable liquids. If you want to see how it burns, light a candle (outside away from flammable things) and throw a handful of powdered creamer at it. WARNING: BE CAREFUL AND USE COMMON SENSE. ALWAYS TAKE PROPER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH FLAMMABLE MATERIALS.
