How to make a robot car which automatically reverses its direction after going a certain distance? Answered

I am using a DPDT switch, but have difficulty to decide what trigger to use.  I need to make the robot go 3 meters and the robot size itself is limited (15x15x15cm)

You'll need something to measure the distance and reverse the motor as needed. Simplist solution is to use a micro controller. Time how long it takes the car to go the distance required. Program the micro to drive forward for that amount of time then reverse the motor.

The simplest solution is to drive the car by wrapping a cord around the drive axle, and then pulling it off with the motor. If you wind three metres around the axle one way, then another three the opposite way, the car will drive forwards for three metres, then reverse back again for the other three. No microconrollers, no programming, no switches, just string.

Replace the weight with an electric motor, use thin string (something like a pre-stretched kite line), and you'll get a lot mor than 3m range out of it.

thanks for your suggestion! That's what I thought at first, but we are not allowed to use a micro controller unfortunately.

Would help to outline all the parameters of the build. But this sounds like it's a school project. In which case there is a lesson to be learned here and you'll need to research it on your own.
