How to stiffen a collar? Answered

I have several dressy shirts that have floppy collars, or collars that crease in the wrong place.  They have to be ironed each time I wear them.  How can I permanently stiffen the collar so that it stands up nicely and looks good?

Starch would be the traditional method wouldn't it ?

My understanding is that starch will wash out with laundering; is that not true?  Collar stays will help the front of the collar; any ideas for the back?  The collars tend to crease near the middle, rather than where the collar joins the shirt.  Thanks for the help!
