I don't know what kind of Ipod it is (you didn't specify), but this is from Apple,

"To turn iPod on, press any button. To turn it off, press and hold the Play button.
When iPod is turned off, it goes to sleep. For more information see iPod: About Sleep, Deep Sleep, and Sleep Timer
If iPod doesn't turn on, the Hold switch may be set, or its internal battery may need to be charged.

iPod shuffle
To turn off iPod shuffle, move the switch on the back of iPod shuffle to the off position.
Tip: When iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible."

If that doesn't help, the battery might be dead.

Probably out of power. Maybe user error, or maybe they gave you a broken one so they could accuse you of breaking it...

Sadly, I know a few people who might try that. Sure hope it didn't happen to him.

Oops... Egg on my face... Let's say he/she. Can't be too careful. :)
Her profile says "female", but then again, this is the internet, and there is a "bloke" gender.

Ok. No offense was meant. Just a little ugly American humor.

Hey For the ipod nano Im pretty sure there is a switch on the top that you can lock it with so it wont turn on or off. but with most others you just hold in the play button
