to augment what Carter said, what you probably have is what is known as a DP-6T rotary switch. that means 2 poles, 6 throws, and it's most likely that the two circuits are electrically independent from each other. Here's what one looks like in schematic form

Use a DMM (digital multimeter) to check continuity between pins, write down that positions contact which pins, and you're done! Thats probably the simplest way unless you know the model number and you can find a data sheet or something online.
