What did you upgrade? It sounds like it could be tied to that. Missing drivers, incompatible hardware, or improperly installed hardware could all be at fault, among other things.

There was an article on the BBC recently where somebody replaced their motherboard, and then all the websites he regularly used started accusing him of being a hacker because his PC "looked" different.

Could that be your issue?

I can't see that happening at all...even in a reasonable sense - a website shouldn't be able to know your computer other than your mac address, which is masked because everyone is behind a NAT.

Windows will poop the bed if you swap motherboards, as your hardware ID will change, and it will think you've pirated the OS onto a new computer (just needs reinstalling/reactivating)

+1... I've never heard of a website knowing that your hardware has changed. The windows OS, all the time. Heck... even if I change out the HDD and image it over it will know something's wrong.

With permission - a webpage can read your hardware (such as the nvidia 'graphics card detector' java plugin that helps you decide on what driver to download.

True... forgot about that... I generally don't use those hardware detector plugins... ;)
