I can only connect to my (new) wireless home network when my roommate’s computer is turned on, how do I fix that? Answered

So I recently moved into a new place. The Internet service (wireless modem) was already installed. However, I could not connect to the network with my laptop. I tried troubleshooting, resetting, everything. Then when my roommate got home and turned on her laptop, I could suddenly connect to the Internet on my laptop. And I’ve confirmed that hypothesis time and time again. I am certain of it. My laptop can connect to any other network just fine.  I just want to know how to fix this because it’s very frustrating not having Internet at home despite paying for it. I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything. You guys are my only hope. :'(

"I could not connect to the network with my laptop"

Isn't much of a fault description, nor do you say what you have tried. This is why you haven't got many answers.

1. Did you try connecting to the router with a cable.

2. Can you SEE the router on your wireless network

3. Are you inputting the right password.

3. The router is a largely dumb device that has a list of devices that can connect to it. That list isn't dependent on other devices being on line. Open the router (look on line to see how) and check if your laptop is in the device list.

When you have done these things come back and tell us the results.

It is VERY hard to fault find a system when your remote from it and have little or no knowledge of how it is configured. Any answer will be general.

IF all else fails then get a computer literate friend to come round to sort it out for you.

You do realise that you should contact your ISP for this problem?
Last time I checked Instructables is not supplying internet to rented homes....
