In a pinch you can use the unglazed rim on the bottom of a ceramic plate, bowl, or mug to put an edge on a knife.  Definitely works for smaller blades, I once sharpened my Swiss army knife bade in a hotel room this way.

That woks really well,  for the layman he mans a a coffee cup,  on the bottom were the shinny stuff is missing or broken,   you can also use a  flat rock in a pinch,  and for a real fine razor edge you can use glass.  i have sharpenned my gargen machete and hatchet  on a concrete side walk same for the hoe .

Wet or dry sandpaper works well.  Stick a piece with glue or double sided tape to a smooth, flat surface (a small rectangular mirror is good) and use it as you would a wet stone.
Use 220 grit to work it to an edge, then finish it with 400 or 600 grit

220 would be a good start if there wasn't an edge there to start with, but for re-sharpening, it's too coarse.

Try the un-glazed bottom of a china dish or buy an oil-stone.

What sort of blade, what do you have that's abrasive?
