I need 2 sensors, but don't know which types are useful, Problem is all of sensors must be in closed boxes. Answered

hi,
I need two sensors, but don't know which types are useful for my project, i'll use to get position and range of another. the problem is all of sensors must be placed in a closed box but i can't place them outside of boxes, first box which is receiver in it has to be placed in 2 x 0,5 cm hard plastic and one 0,5 cm rubber walls, second one has to be placed in only one 0.5 cm plastic wall.i'm going to use these in an area of 100 cm² enviroment.

For position you could think about using a three axis accelerometer. These measure the motion of an object like the WII's controller. If you take the integral of this you'll get the change in position.

What precision of position do you want ?

i need to know precisely the position of transmitter around the receiver and the distance is not so important to me but it will be useful if receiver tells me how distant  is the transmitter with 1-2 meter mistake option.

sory my mistake, yes the area is 100m². maybe i can't  tell my problem clearly, my english isn't enaught for it.  The receiver must tell me where is the transmitter, like a compas like 25° front-left or 12° backward-right. and i need distance data as:
is it in area 1meter?
is it in area betewen 1 and 2 meters?
is it in area betewen 2 and 5 meters?
is it in area betewen 5 and 50 meters?
is it in area betewen 50 and 100 meters?

Is using sound permissible ? Ultrasonics could do it.

so i think this about comment back, i hope it was mean "copy and paste some message to another answer". if not; i'm sory for it

i don't have any knowladge about sensors, i did'nt use except infrared. i heard ultrasonics but i don't know are them trustable in closed boxes, is echo problemm in boxes? and weather with rain or wind. I think about gps localization Systems but are them trustable in small areas can i get trustable drection data in 1 meter? What is the batery necessity? probaly i can't make sensors, I'm going to buy. if i got manuals from producers with few example i can install it to my project with my pic and electronics knowladge. but how can I understand the transmiter and reciver are harmonious with each others that i'm going to buy. if you propose me type of sensors and underline important features of this sensors. i can focus about it. i don't know where i can start.

So these have to be sealed ? Why plastic ? Metal boxes would be better for our purposes. What pressure are we sealing against ?

i ca't explain my problem correcty. i'm not sealing any thing just hidding in a container with nice display. i can desigin container in "solidworks" and cut it 3d with "cnc table"  put the transmiter and reciver in container then  with the  super glue i can close container but don't have any experince with metal or weld.

I was searched some of sensors bu i cant found any gps module with accuracy: <3m or any ultrasonic or sensors distance > 18m

and if i use sonar i cand handle my problem with only 1 transmiter and reciver. i must be build a sensor network with minumum 4 reciver and 4 transmiter? like here: "http://ai.stanford.edu/~asaxena/papers/Ashutosh_CS229project_sensorNetwork.pdf". am I right?

It sounds like what you are looking for will be VERY complicated electronically. Its not something I'd do from little electronics background. I'd place say 4 microphones around the area, I'd have a radio link to each box to let  it "chirp" on command, then I'd command each unit to chirp, and make a time measurement back to each microphone. That way I could calculate range.

With REALLY sophisticated hardware you could actually transmit continuously from each box, but this approach will be scanned every few 100 msec.

You say ultrasonics > 18m , but your 100m^2^ test area would imply a 10X 10 m dimension ?

It sounds like you want a sophisticated radio system?
Why do you mention things like hard plastic and rubber walls, without saying what you want to do?

i can't say project because of my english :) i'm not hidding it. it will be like a spy gadget, the transmitter will be inside somethink like jewelery or something can I hide inside of them. i said plastic because i can use and shape it easly so i can make  what i want as a container and hide transmitter. so reciver must be hidden, i have more space for it but it will be stay in a public area so i need to protect it from damage or rigours of the weather. I'll log the data to my computer with wire less connection, i can handle it but i don't know how can i learn drection and distance.

Steve' may be more useful than me on this (well rather likely), this sounds difficult. Do you have / can you build radio / ultrasonic transmitters?
