I need help creating a telephone network! Answered

Hey! I was wondering if there's any clever people out there who can help me with my ambitious project. I'm doing some creative direction for an event and aim to create a telephone network within the venue. I want to put phones on tables and use the table numbers as the phone numbers... I also would like a way of recording everything thats said over the course of the night through the telephones? I have a very basic understanding of how these things work, I've made circuits before- but i am an artist, not an electrician so please be kind and explain to me like you would a child! I've got my hands on a load of old phones, so I just need to rewire them I guess?
Thanks!

What you want to do is a much bigger project than you realize. More than just hooking a few wires together. Simplest to jut get an old computer and install pbx software.. You can get analog-ip interfaces for the old phones. or use wifi and let people us their existing cellphones..There was a time when you could get old pbx systems from old bell offices. Good luck doing that now.

POTS, PBX, RJ-11, relays, switching protocol, rotary encoders, analog,...

I don't think it is that easy to set up a home telephone system. Old phones can probably be connected together with a simple circuit/battery to power the line. You would get one huge party line whenever someone picks up the phone, just like you can hear the other extension phones in the house. The complex thing is to get the phone to ring which means sending a 90 volt buzz to the right phone. Also if you are using the standard pulse or touch tone, electronics is required to route the phone number you are trying to dial. Recording phone conversations without the user's consent is wiretapping, a federal crime. Maybe something with a few tin cans and string might work? Good luck.
