One person owns a collaboration but, at least before it's published, multiple people can edit it. One thing to note is that, at least the last time I saw the staff answer a similar question, only the owner (whoever created the Instructable initially) is the only person who gets credit for the views, comments, etc. They also are the only ones who win if the Instructable places in a contest. It would be up to the collaborators to divide the prize.

An example of a collaboration might be a class with the owner being the teacher.

Can anyone search for and edit a collaboration before it is published?

A collaboration is when you get together with one or more members t work on an instructable. Thus allowing each person involved access to the instrucatble while it's still being created and linking each person to the instructable one it is published. I don't think this feature has been fully implemented yet. But if it has i'd sure like to know how to start a collaboration.

To start collaberating: Edit the Instructable in question. Click the More button to the right of Publish and select Collaborate out of the list. Follow the steps.

Collaborations show up with the old Instructables hand image by their image in your Drafts page.
