I want to make some rotating LEDs (led ball), any ideas on how to make the conection? Answered

I wanted to make one myself, so here I am, after gettin my head on fire and not getting a really good method of turning the LEDs on.

For now, I'll make a 2-axis only, and maybe later add the third axis
I already have an idea on how to make connect the power to the structure with the motor that rotates the LEDs, but I'm having a really hard time trying to get that power to the LEDs.

My idea was to use 2 springs, 1 for positive and the other for negative (in the original project, he used a spring to the positive), but they failed as they kept the motor from spinning...

Any ideas?

Standard solution is sliding contacts. For example: Make up a PCB with two concentric rings of copper. Use spring contacts on the battery side to press against those copper rings, Connect from the rings to the rest of your circuit. If you have more than LEDs being powered, you may need a capacitor on the moving side to help buffer you against occasionally losing contact -- but the LEDs won't care, they'll just flicker for a moment.

If the springs keep the motor from spinning, you have the wrong motor or are applying much too much pressure with the springs. Probably the wrong motor.

I'm using PS2 joystick motors. I made a test to see if they can get enough speed to form a continuum circle of light, and they can, and was using 2 springs from standard BIC pens, one on the resistor side (+) and the other on the negative side.

I connected a wire to the spring, then I put the spring around the transparente tube (also from a BIC pen) and finally the motors on both ends.

On the second pic you can see a copper triangle on the PCB, that's where the spring makes contact

I'd suggest leaf springs with a smooth contact surface rather than coil springs. Easier to keep them touching the rings.

Make 'em. Any bit of thin sheet metal metal which is springy and can be bent and mounted so a smooth surface presses against the contact.
