I want to use a 555 timer to be off for 1 minute, give a brief pulse (about 0.5 seconds). Answered

The circuit is to provide a pulse to a 4017B decade counter to count up to 5 minutes

1. it wont be accurate

2. You looking for a monostable cct with an asymmetric duty cycle. IE longer of than on. The data sheet for the 555 should help you.

3. You could use 2 or a 556 (a double 555 in a single ic) and use one half to measure 1 min and then trigger the other half to produce the pulse.

I know I said monostable but I intended to say bistable - It was a bit late here in the UK.
