Ideas for my new free G3 iBook Answered

So I just got a free 700mhz G3 iBook, 40gig HDD, 384 megs of RAM. It's got the classic pinched cables in the hinge problem, meaning the backlight isn't working right. I'm just looking for ideas of what I should do with it because I'm thinking about making an instructable for whatever I do. Current Ideas are Set Top box for my tv, ghetto apple tv Fix the screen, duh Steampunk it Make a new case and make it a desktop Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Something else I was thinking of was building a retro briefcase mod, like a 50's style laptop.

Yeah, the only problem is I have too many ideas right now and not enough time. The reason I like this idea is that it allows me to add stuff to the laptop like a webcam and a better keyboard / mouse set up.

Yeah, i was actually considering the projector route. I just thought I'd do something new for the instructable because there are a few of that kind on here already. Just trying to doing something new and helpful. As for the vlc route, I was thinking of using one of the iBook rca cables that plug into the headphone jack instead of streaming. Although at the same time I've seen some cool headless mac servers that i could do too.

I meant to stream from another one to it. You could have it do both streaming and be a server

Wow, it's sad that I actually didn't think of that at all, haha. I like that idea too, i've got my xbox with XBMC on it already though.

Where can I get an iBook? Are they decently cheap?

You could always look at eBay, if you're seriously looking, go for a G4. The G3's can't handle leopard. They're a couple hundred bucks usually.

I'm looking for a laptop for email and browsing the web as well as simple apps. I don't care if it's outdated or anything. Since the Macbooks are standard, I figured iBooks may be cheaper. How much is a g4?

On eBay it's between 300 and 500 bucks.

Well "'I"' was darn lucky. Since I'm a geek, my dad (a math prof) set up a tour of his buildings server room. When we went to meet the sys admin, I saw a pile of old computers in his office, and tentatively asked "what are you doing with those?", his reply was "you "'want"' them", he clearly regarded them as obsolete pieces of junk that needed to be discarded... so later we swung by and picked them up.

That's pretty cool. I've been doing that at the various places my father has worked for a while too. Never got anything quite as good as you, but it's amazing how much tech that's still very usuable gets thrown in the junk piles.

Hi, Install Yellow Dog Linux on it, then install Slimserver and stream music over wireless if it has a wireless card, or over cable, as the G3 has an ethernet port. You can then listen to music on any PC in your house.... Rgds

Does it have a VGA slot? you might be able to just rip the screen off and use it as a desktop...

Yeah, it's got the mini-dvi port and I've got the vga adapter. I'm contemplating that idea and giving it a pretty cool case if i can pull it off.

Someone I work with was talking about her old "broken" laptop and how she didn't want it anymore. I of course pounced on the opportunity.

There was another option: send it to GorillazMiko.

Hehe, while that does sound like a legitimate option, I think i'll have to go with a no on that one.

well, about 10 hours ago I was thinking that if I got a ibook then I'd mod it into an instructables robot case, have the slot load cd thing as the bar in front of the robot, have one of the buttons in fron be power, the other eject, and the last one would be something like leds or anything like that.

Wow, that's a pretty cool idea! Not something I'd be able to pull off probably, but still cool.
