Just run the newer IDE and you'll be fine. Unless your making a big jump from a much older version of the IDE to 1.0 or newer. Then some of your older libraries may have problems and you may need to find updated versions of the libraries due to the way the newer IDE compiles the sketches.

The folder that the IDE is in should have it in the label. When you open the IDE it will also tell you what version your running in the upper left corner of the window. When the IDE is starting up it tells you in the little Window that shows when it's loading. If you missed it there you can click on Help and goto About Arduino to see it again.

The most recent version is Arduino 1.0.4 and will not change anything you would notice from 1.0.

You don't update the Arduino IDE. You download and use the latest version.
