I'm wondering how easy is is to make a capacitor for use with a coil gun? Answered

I would like to build a coil gun and have it run off capacitors of my own make but i'm wondering what i should make them out of and what medium i should use like maybe a salt water lemon juice mix or some acid or alkaline solution or a oil I'd prefer vacuum from what I've researched but i have no idea how to make a vacuum cap I'm a broke mad scientist

I don't think you can make capacitors with a high enough capacitance for a coil gun without them heving their own zip code. Can you not get disposable camera capacitors?

if you can't get any post or PM me and I can try to get some and send them to you for the price of postage.

i can I just like to try my hand at building anything and everything at least once I can get almost any metal i need and melt it and mold it into any shape i want i can make sand molds i can get plenty of glass shaping its a challenge only cause i've never done but seen it done multiple times and i can get ceramic tiles so from what i understand i should be able to do it.

I love to build my own stuff to. But there are some things that you just can't fix or build. There was even a Macgyver where he said there are some things that can't be fixed, and this is one of them. And Macgyver is the king of all DIYers.

It's like building your own computer you can build your own computer without etching your own circuit boards and soldering your own components.

true I understand this still gonna build one but i was just trying to get a sense of how much work it would be to make a cap that would hold a decent charge for small projects for scale models that way my inventory wouldn't get depleted from mishaps or whatever you see i live in the sticks i mean way out in the sticks and I can't really get into town and i can't order online at the moment because of lack of money and no internet access im borrowing a laptop at the moment

I can apreciate that. I am not exactly in a bustling hub of civilization either.

I'm not in the middle of nowhere but you can see it from here.

I like where i live cause i can pretty much do what i want big shop forge whatever but i just wish i had hardline highspeed service and a decent close by job i'm fixin to start traveling outta florida for a job so maybe i'll be able to get a laptop and internet service then it's look out mad scientist on the loose lol but nothing bad just sparks pops and flames

I totally agree with you. I love living in the country. If I tried to make potassium nitrate and sugar smoke bombs in the city my house would become a regular visiting location for the fire department. Where I live I have a DSL line for internet but it is anly about a third of the speed it should be.

Good luck

....I like that expression. I may steal it for future use :-)

Feel free to use it. It isn't my expression, I am not sure where I heard it first.

Here are a few other good expressions:

It is always darkest before it goes pitch black.

High value capacitors are difficult to make if you really want them to be small.

In essence a capacitor is 2 conductors separated by an insulator.

The capacitance, expressed simply, is a function of the area of the conductors and the distance between them and the dielectric constant of the insulator.

To make a BIG value capacitor you need plates with a large area and a reasonable distance between them - As that distance gets less the area must increase.

what kind of metal should plates be and what kind of distance like what's the minimum and what insulator should be used is a vacuum tube prefered in small gap situations

A conductor is all it needs to be ie any metal.

The distance depends on a lot of factors - The working voltage - The capacitance required

Although you can get inter electrode capacitance it is tiny A capacitor doesn't need any tunes, transistors etc it is a physical thing.

I fear your knowledge isn't good enough at present to build such a device let alone use it in a high voltage high energy situation.

You need to do a lot of study and preparation work before your going to get that far - Far more information is required than can be passed on a brief messages here.
