Instructable about "netiquette"? Answered

I have a question. I have an idea for an Instructable about "netiquette" (ie: etiquette on the net) Would anyone here actually think it would be useful, or would the people who need it not feel like they need it? I personally think that it may help people who need it. Any tips, suggestions, ideas, etc?

I think it would be nice to have one, and hell, I'd write it - but I also know that the people it would be targeting would just throw a fit and the little "netiquette" they had would go out the window. :P After moderating a bunch of 13 year old boys on IGN I know this better than anyone!

You used to moderate for IGN? Which board?

Oh dear, lots of place... IGNCB, Vestibule, Sex, Health & Dating, For Girls, Classic Gaming CB, Pokemon, random sports boards, Resident Evil, For Men and Women CB... and I'm sure others as well. I mostly just did what they needed me to do at the time, which was usually the Vesti.

The Vesti was actually moderated? Oh man, I think my memory of the Vesti can be summed up with one topic title: "Who here likes teh buttsekz!?!?!" I used to write for the PS2 department back in the day. We'd take occasional looks at it and just laugh.

Hahaha, so you've been properly introduced, then. The kids there certainly do enjoy teh buttsekz. And goatse. And tubgirl. And weightlifter... Oh, I think I've seen everything terrible on teh internet just by moderating the Vesti for a year+. And I know it doesn't look moderated, but there's actually quite a lot of damage control going on behind the scenes! Just sometimes, when no mods are online and the users pick up on that, all hell breaks loose and it takes forever to clean up. I had to quit moderating because those little bastards were eating away all my free time. :P

Well, I didn't see any shock images (never have, thank god), but the names of the threads were bad enough. Besides, anywhere where the words "naked" and "Vanessa Anne Hudgens" is not a place I want to be.

Haha, that's actually rather tame for them. :P

Yes, it is. Just don't google the names that jessyratfink mentioned. It'll be burned in your mind forever.

Oh, trust me, I won't. I know what they are. Just never seen them, that's all. And I'm going to try and stay that way. Goatse... *shudders*

Too late. I have been Goatse'd. To tell you the truth, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Still gross.

I moderate a few forums at a place that one would "think" would be pretty calm, CARE2.com where lots of activists for world improvement meet......to bash each other's heads in.

Actually, it isn't all that bad.....just a few bad apples, but it can get weird at times...some of the most "anti-war" groups can sure get involved with hate flinging and flame wars. *sigh*

I can imagine that it would get pretty bad. All the major anti-war people I know can get pretty freaky. And violent. Pretty scary.

Well, it is not just them...I used that as the example ( those yelling peace, no war....or ELSE !) , you know, like those people a brick or so shy of a load that bomb ( and thus kill people) abortion clinics in the name of "stopping all the death". And another one flies over the coo-coo's nest.... (there is a joke in there somewhere....for those that remember the movie and never thought about the title....here's your change ;-) ). Animal rights people can fight amongst themselves like politicians at times *lol*

What's the Vesti? Some sort of psycho forum as far as I can tell. And it's a little un-stereotypical for me to be writing this thing, because i'm a 14-year-old boy.

I'm with the majority here - those that need it probably won't heed it. They may even take the instructable too personally and start a flame war.

I would suggest that others do as I do - if somebody crosses the line, let them know as politely as possibly, maybe even by PM.

If they're well over the line, use the flag function, and if you object to the existance of a thread, don't add to it. Just send the offender a PM - they'll still get the message, but the offending thread will be given a chance to slide down into oblivion (especially if it's a spam thread).

I never expected this to get so many replies. Thank you all for the advice. I'm currently working on it, along with a little flip book for my elective, animation. I have some pictures, too! Whoo!

Focussing on simple netiquette and precaution like always logoff after you're done, instead of just closing the browser window might be useful.

It isn't exactly an FAQ. It's more like a "helpful tips" sort of thing with suggestions on how to stay pretty much attack-free on the Internet, and a few Instructable-specific tips, such as "Don't add a project to a group if it doesn't fit in the group."

Urk. I'm really not sure what to do here. Everyone I've asked in the real world says it's a good idea, bit I think it would be ultimately fruitless. Such a dilemma. Let a good idea die, or make a pretty much useless Instructable.

If you help one person that takes it to heart, it was not "fruitless" nor worthless in any way.

. Yep. 99.999% of the ppl that _need_ to read a 'Netiquette guide won't bother, but, if you can help that one poor soul that is willing to learn, it will be worth it. . You should have plenty of resources to work with - there are already thousands of 'netiquette guides out there. I'd suggest making it Instructables specific, eg, no need to post in All if you post to a group, proper use of keywords, &c. . Crappy titles are one of my pet peeves. The title of this thread is short, sweet, to the point, and makes sense - I like it.

Thank you! I never really thought about making it Instructable-specific, but now that makes a lot of sense. And thanks about the title.

Yes, I know what you mean here. I know personally, if someone says I crossed the line, I am very sorry, and will try not to "go there" again.

I think you're right..the people who need it would either not think they do, or not care about the fact that they need it.

That's what I was thinking. Those who don't need it would appreciate it, and those who actually need it would be too busy insulting it to pay attention to it.

Yea that would be a pretty useful Instructable. Although it is sad that a good portion of users on the interweb could care less about how they insult others, or cause problems.
