Instructables - Finalist for Best User-Generated Content Award in the Crunchies
Instructables is a finalist in the category of "Best user-generated content site" in the Crunchies. As described on the site, the Crunchies are the
first annual competition and award ceremony to recognize and celebrate the most compelling startups, internet and technology innovations of the year. The Crunchies is a collaboration project between GigaOm, Read/WriteWeb, VentureBeat and TechCrunch. Best of all, the internet community is invited to choose who wins.
The winner is determined by voting by the internet at large. You can vote once a day until voting ends at midnight PST Thursday, January 10. Award winners will be announced live at the Awards Ceremony at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco on Friday, January 18.
Perhaps you've been thinking that your project was the underdog in our Laser Cutter Contest, well now it's the same for Instructables! Check out our competition!:
Digg
Facebook
Geni
Yelp
We are by far the smallest and least well-funded of the contenders, so it's really a testament to how awesome the Instructables community is that we're able to even appear among these giants. Given the nature of the voting, I'd bet Digg is in the lead, but head over, show your support, and vote for Instructables:

I tried to get into digg, but never really could. I just feel like I need to filter through too much stuff to get to anything that I like. And facebook? Come on. It's instructables hands down!

even if we didn't win all the other sites are for people with no lives. only intelligent people come here. viva la instructables!!!!!!

Man, we may have not won, but to me, Instructables is always the winner.
No matter what, nothing is better than Instructables. (As in websites, and some real life stuff too.)
Instructables will live on, I was so mad, but wow.. Instructables still rules.
Digg sucks.

The selections are a bit, well, arbitrary. But I'm not complaining! I just read the fine print: it says that anyone can vote, once per day! What a weird system...
Reply 13 years ago
I actually understand the system, sort of.
If a site is really that great, you'll come back every day to vote for it. If its ~euh~, you'll just come once based on some link posted on the site.
Its a way of filtering out best from most users, I'd say.

Is somebody going to the presentation? Don't forget to take a camera.

Did you guys win? :-)

We have to wait until they open the Golden Envelope, I think.

I put in 5 votes total in 2 days.... did the best I could. Facebook is like the instructable for How to create social and relationship drama.... I hope they don't win. but I mean they won' cause instructables will!!
I voted everyday, are you guys going to the show thing?
I voted and put a sticky up to remind me to vote everyday. Instructables has been very good to me and I've met some great people.

Hah I went back and the voting is Over as of Yesterday! I should have read the fine print...

My vote is in... It's for you! Not Mitt Romney... or Hillary...or...

I voted too. I will again every time I can.

Crazyness. I don't really like the whole once a day voting idea. It becomes more about how many OCD users your site has rather than the true value users feel the site offers. I'm still voting. It's a race! I hope I win! -bg

Actually, now that I've voted, I think that they do it this way to overcome the problem of user voting without registration. Who knows if someone is in a lab and clicking "vote" on all the comps repeatedly. Soln: 1 vote a day, but as many as you'd like. Makes sense aie? -BG

I voted! :)

I've voted for instructables. I'd bet if everyone on this site votes, we could win!
Reply 13 years ago
let me fix that. if everyone on this site votes once every day, we could win.

We are going to lose, HARD, we dont have as many useres
I voted anyway

Facebook and digg are user generated content? Seems more like stealing other peoples videos and submitting other peoples websites Metacafe should be on there.
Reply 13 years ago
They probably don't consider Metacafe a startup (there is apparently quite a debacle over how finalists were choosen; I didn't even know we were nominated!), but you're right, it would be a good choice.
