Instructables group on facebook
So our intern got me to finally check out facebook and I started a new account to find out that I'm one of the last few people in the metaverse to jump on this thing. Its all a bit new to me, but I did find an Instructables group. If you want to see a picture of me eating a flower, go and hit it up and join.

I don't facebook. I'm afraid the government will use it to make me think that all my friends aren't in the gay-polygamous-cult, so that I'll quit it. And... I just don't want to ever have my name on anything a future employer might see... except here... since I can't help it :P There's a Zach Banks in Louisiana that does steriods and drugs... hope I seem different enough from him... *checks muscle*... how could anyone accuse me of taking steriods? :P

It's FaceBook.com. I heard about FaceBook.com too, I visited it once, but I still don't understand what this site is all about ...

It's a social networking site that was based around colleges, but now anyone can join it. Of the ones that I've tried this has the best interface. myspace is simply horrible.

It's a social networking site
That's exactly what I fail to understand : "social networking site".
I absolutely don't understand the meaning of this concept ... :-/
Everybody seems to understand except me ... it's quite frustrating at long.
What's the purpose of a "social networking site" ?

What's the purpose of a "social networking site" ?
It's based on the degree of separation idea. You have a set of friends (or even relatives). Your friends would also have their own sets of friends, whom would then have their own sets of friends. This creates an interconnected network of friends. It opens opportunity to meet new people based on interest, affiliation, background, localities etc. You can also share photos, exchange messages, post bulletins which are visible to friends within your network.
It is also a mean to locate long lost friends, and be in contact with existing ones. Some people use it for professional networking, some for finding dates, some even use it for stalking.
The major social networking sites are Myspace, Friendster and Facebook.

Technically, any non specialized site with a forum-board could be a generalist "social networking site" ... ?
Reply 13 years ago
Technically yes. But in social networking site, it's more on the personal level. You normally start with people you personally know in the real world, and move forward from there.

Ok, now I think I understand this concept :-) Thanks :-)

I still yet to have the calling urge to network socially, IRC is fine for me.

I think they're to stalk the pretty girl who wouldn't talk to you in 8th grade.

It's a way to keep in touch with friends and to meet new folks with similar interests. For me it's one more outpost on the interwebs for old friends to get a hold of me.

Well, the one I am a member of, Care2, is "animal, human, environmentally focused, but is a social network nonetheless.
Wikipedia uses it in a different way: In its simplest form, a social network is a map of all of the relevant ties between the nodes being studied. The network can also be used to determine the social capital of individual actors. These concepts are often displayed in a social network diagram, where nodes are the points and ties are the lines.

I've avoided myspace, I only use flickr as a photo album, and my youtube account is really only for my 'ibles.
Do I have to start on facebook?
Reply 13 years ago
Honestly, no. For me, a lot of my old friends are all over the world and keep on moving so this is a handy way to keep in touch.

I see that there have been a small group of people that joined the group since I posted this. If you join the group, put up a message on the wall and say who you are on the site.

Just joined. I've been watching it for some time now, but have been too lazy to actually join. And I'm fairly new to facebook too, Fungus amungus, so you're not alone :-)

I don't use facebook. I think I'm one of the last people to sign up for it that I know. But I already have a myspace. And I hate myspace because you start adding all those people you went to school with, and that you didnh't really know, but the're trying to be nice or they're really desperate for e-friends... eeeeee. It's all so awkward, haha. That, and I hate that people track you through it. :P I don't think facebook is much different now that they've opened it to the general population. Or is it?

It looks like the privacy is better. You can't see someone's page unless you're a contact. So less stalker-y that way.

So maybe this is a dumb question, but who's Matthew Borgotti? he created the "Instructables, MAKE, and PopSci DIY Halloween 2007 Contest!" group on facebook and his email is listed as @instructables .com, but he's not on the about page....
Reply 13 years ago
Matt's our new intern. He'll be starting his fourth week today.
On the site, he goes by bofthem.
One of his first duties was to help pick the random winner for the Launch It Challenge.

Oh, cool!

I'm trying to figure out why everyone has the need to ask me if I'm on "facebook" and sound very disappointed when I say no. I haven't even looked at the website, it seems there are very few people like me that realize that these "social networking" sites are just pretty dumb, I hate it. -Punk
