Is a high ampere switch necessary?? Answered

i was going to try to build my now 2nd coil gun but this time wanted a solid state switch. after looking at the following:

i was wondering if an 800A SCR is really necessary or can i just use a 16A SCR?

Calculate how much peak current you're going to put through that SCR. That will give you the answer.

Or you can try it and see if it explodes... Please wear safety glasses if you do try that experiment. Which is actually not a bad idea any time you're working with high voltage or high current; I've seen exploding chips embed themselves in sheetrock.
