Is it possible to increase motor speed by adding current? Answered

Hi there,
I want to increase my 5 volts cooling pad speed by hacking it. I've tried increase the voltage, but the motor died after next hours. I have a plan to increase the current without increase the voltage, but it's doubtful to be worked. Somebody got any idea?

Some 3+ wire CPU fans can run at different speeds but you need sadw or a control to make them assume a different speed.

You can't do that in electronics. You need a stronger (bigger) fan.

Electrical devices draw as much current as they require to work at their designed power rating.

Simplistically this is described by Ohms law - Voltage=Current x Resistance - So you can see that to alter the current you have to alter the resistance or the voltage (not such a good idea as you seem to have found out).

Power (in watts)= Voltage x Current.

The speed of you fan can only be increased by replacing the motor that is driving it for one with more power and speed. (this will probably be bigger so won't fit)

IF you fan speed is by any chance electronically controlled then perhaps by tinkering with the electronics you could speed it up - However your just as likely to brick the whole thing.

You could however try to increase air flow through the fan by removing obstructions, provide cooler air by sitting an ice pack under the fan.

Or looking at why the laptop is so hot in the first place.

That fan is fixed as far as its maximum speed unless you bypass the hall sensors and connect it to a PWM.

A device specified to work with a specific voltage, like a 5V motor, is not designed to handle the currents that an increased voltage will produce. So, in general, no.

Why not get a bigger fan that runs on 12V?
Might be to obvious for a choice though....
