Oh, the sort of thing a cynic might call an "insurance-job"? I doubt Aviva (ex Norwich Union) would accuse the church of getting God to have the place torched, but I'm mindful of certain persons would would view the entire episode (enjoying their nice new interior) in a similar way...
The thieves were caught (trying to sell the silverware), so I don't think it was a "job".
As a general observation, most UK churches have little, or even no, insurance, because they can't afford it, and they can't afford the work (locks, alarms etc) that would make it affordable.
The main insurance thing is being empty for all but a couple of hours a week, and being "known" for being stuffed full of silverware (most of which was sold years ago to pay for the lead that was nicked off the roof).

Thieves lit their way with the enormous altar candles, then knocked them over.

Sort of accidental then, what a shame.

They were insured - the shell was OK, so they completely re-vamped the insides.

Yes, I can imagine - the old buildings cost a fortune to maintain / heat / light / insure etc.

We're staying with my parents in the Easter break, which means we get a night out without the boys.
An actual date!

Interesting way to kill the mood at the end, Hahaha.
Happy anniversary. Hope you have a good day together! (What are you doing on instructables on your 20 year anniversary anyway?)
By the way, why the Sgt. peppers picture?(I'm a Beatles fan, so I have to know.)

It's the end of the day here, but we both worked anyway - we're saving the proper celebration for the Easter break.
It was twenty years ago today...
