It's that time of year again...
...and my computer is sounding like a friggin' jet engine. This happens every year, whenever it gets hot out. It starts up normal, then it eventually gets up to RRRRRRRRRRRR and then goes down for a bit and then gets really loud again. I just put my headphones on and I'm actually getting noise in them, coming from the noise in my computer. Holy crap. I just tried recording the sound using a microphone, but it doesn't really work. How can I get it to be quieter (NO HARDWARE MODS PLZKTHX)?

The only way I can think of is to put a few more fans in the case. ;-) or you can try putting a fan next to it.

Yeah, get one of those 4x4 fans and open up the computer case ;-)

That's why Al Gore invented air conditioning.

Gee, I thought that was normal.....mine has been doing that from day one (it proclaims on the label it has a new Quiet HD; like as in, compared to what? a locomotive? )

Its ok, when I get the computer on the boil (Highly appropriate phrase) It sounds like the HDD is a machine gun and the fans are preparing for take off, it's remarkably tolerant, if it locks up you leave it five minutes and it's caught up again...

Try opening it and vacuuming out the dust. Keep it out of direct light

I vaccum it sometimes, but there's no dust in the way. I actually have to have it turned 90 degrees so the side is facing the wall and the fans have infinite space. I have it in a hallway, so it gets kinda hot in here, but there's no windows nearby for ventilation (or to heat it).
