It's the End of the World As We Know It ...
... and I Feel Fine.
So the LCH "red button" day is coming up. It is supposed to happen mid-June with collisions starting a couple of months later (I haven't found any actual dates yet though). I know that the chances of it producing a mini black hole that gobbles up the Earth (or one of many other strange, never before seen, apocalyptic theoretical physics scenarios) are small, but still ...
Who thinks it would be fun to throw a party the night before they fire it up? So if the next day we all cease to exist, we could at least have the satisfaction of going out with a (big) bang.
The parties could be physics themed too. We could have snacks and drinks that are composed of atoms. We could tell physics jokes ("Supercollider, I barely even know her"). We could read passages from "Flatland". And to finish the night off (this almost goes without saying for apocalypse motivated parties) we would have a massive bokononism style orgy.
What do you say Instructables members, want to rub some feet?
Edit: CERN is actually being sued to prevent the firing up of the LHC. Link

Unified Field Theory by Tim Joseph
In the beginning there was Aristotle,
At objects at rest tended to remain at rest,
And objects in motion tended to come to rest,
And soon everything was at rest,
And God saw that it was boring.
Then God created Newton,
And objects at rest tended to remain at rest,
But objects in motion tended to remain in motion,
And energy was conserved and momentum was conserved
and matter was conserved,
And God saw that it was conservative.
Then God created Einstein,
And everything was relative,
And fast things became short,
And straight things became curved,
And the universe was filled with inertial frames,
And God saw that it was relatively general, but some
of it was especially relative.
Then God created Bohr,
And there was the principle,
And the principle was quantum,
And all things were quantified,
But some things were still relative,
And God saw that it was confusing.
Then God was going to create Ferguson,
And Ferguson would have unified,
And he would have fielded a theory,
And all would have been one,
But it was the seventh day,
And God rested,
And objects at rest tend to remain at rest.

Bravo. I found this to be quite entertaining. I laughed a little.

If only we could rate comments, oh and favourite them too.

where does tesla fit in?
Reply 12 years ago
I don't think he does. Tesla was an experimentalist, not a theorist, especially when it comes to things that might now be called "cosmology."

Need to shoehorn in an Alpher, Bethe and Gamow joke there.

What's this red button day, LCH thing?

The most anticipated date in physics is the day the world's biggest particle-smasher, Europe's Large Hadron Collider, reaches full power. That day had been set for last November, but a magnet mishap and other factors forced a delay until this spring. The final piece of one of the collider's mammoth detectors, the Compact Muon Solenoid, was lowered into its underground cavern just last month. And now the big day is likely to come in June or July rather than May.

We're all going to die!!!! Eventually... I have this horrible sinking feeling that I am one day closer to death than I was yesterday.

I wounder what's going to happen on december 21 2012, for that is the most hyped up dooms date.

i dont know. but think about it: no one wants to die in 2012, but if we dont die, everyone will feel let down. and i like the idea of a party. but wed need to watch some starswars/startreck/hichikersguidetothegalaxie/battlestargalactica/stargatesg1 too
