Kind of Paper used for Paper Mache
Not a silly question. What kind of paper do you use in items made out of Paper Mache? the instructions I have call for strips torn from old newspapers but when my local newspaper went out of business that kind of killed the supplier for this kind of craft. papers are different so the results wont be the same as with newspaper. Thought making paper mache models would be a great and kind of cheap way to try out some ideas.

Hi there, Thank you Pie Popper for mentioning my website. Very flattering. About paper. Of course newspaper is the best material for making paper mache strips. But consider paper towels if you can't get newspaper. You should be able to get that in school. Ask the custodian for a roll. Art is a good cause. Good luck! Dan

Depends on the type of paper mache you want. If you are using strips, any paper will work. If you need strength, more layers or stronger paper (like cotton rather than wood fibers) or even cloth can be used. You can pulp the paper to make something more like clay, but it takes a while to mash down and then to dry.

The pulpier the better.

I think that's why Keith's kleenex method is so effective ? He get really good textures with it. Steve

that's in part due to the kleenex's ability to form into pretty much any shape..it's softness more than anything. The pulp is for good absorption of the glue.

then again it's great for absorbing ~~goo~~ glue too.

He has some good YouTube video of the process

You can also use the newspapers they push through your door... Any kind of paper that will absorb water will make papier mache. Experiment.

I have only ever used newspaper and wallpaper glue, or ever known it to be made from those materials. When I need (news)paper, all my rellies save theirs for me, so supply is never a problem. Perhaps another cheap(ish) source of paper for you is backing wallpaper. You can buy it in various grades from quite thin to quite thick. For just a few bucks you can get masses.
