LHC Countdown
They have started the final countdown for the LHC.
Some say that it will find the God particle.
Others say that it will kill us all.
I say hope for the best, but [http://instructables.com/community/Its-the-End-of-the-World-As-We-Know-It-.../ prepare for the worst.]

some people who are usually pretty knowlegeable about such things pointed out that even if the machine does form microscopic black holes, and even if they don't evaporate immediately, you're talking about black holes that are so small (much smaller than a proton, for instance) that they'd have a lot of trouble interacting with any normal particles anyway.

Just in case something happens tomorrow while I'm at school...I love you all <3
Except for you Nacho...

Nothing's happening...

The world could be enveloped by a black hole.

Not to say I told you so, but I did, you know, tell you so.

Of course you do not realize it, but the universe ended already. What we are experiencing now are fleeting moments of consciousness as our whole existence disintegrates, like stars off a firework, to nothing.

No, I mean, other than your statement.

No. Not happening.

I'd also like to say goodbye, in case anything happens, and I really love all of you guys, and if we die, then best of luck, especially if you're Buddhist (not sure how reincarnation would work after an apocalypse) .
And oh yeah Keith-Kid... I was the one who stole your boxers and replaced them with Godzilla underwear, not Kiteman.

Well there going to smash there first particle on October 27, 2008. They just turned it on and tested to see if the beam went all away around the LHC, which it did.

Bearing in mind that most people there have never existed outside university culture, with a university sense of humour, what are the chances, just around 0700 tomorrow, of the live webcast suddenly featuring a loud claxon and a worried voice saying Oh, SH..... just as the image goes to static?

Oh man..that'd be great!

I highly doubt this can do any damage it's under a vacuum!!! I wonder how long it takes to create that vacuum?

I HAVE DECIDED THAT I HATE THE LHC!! I have barely been able to turn around at school today without kids demanding to know if it was true that we are all about to die in a big bang when somebody switches this thing on, it was on the news, you know, so it must be true... It's harder than you'd think to un-educate children who get their high-level physics from Bruce Willis films...

It will not end the world.

I dunno, but why does it look like Kiteman standing in the core of that thing or does not Kitewife know that this is built out in the garage while pretending to perfect jam jar jets?
Reply 12 years ago
Good grief, so it does!
Listen, if it does all go badly wrong, it wasn't me!

Is there a bigger resolution image? I would love to have that shot as my wallpaper.

. I didn't see a bigger version of that pic on the first two pages of hits, but searching Google Images for LHC turns up a LOT of very cool stuff.
Reply 12 years ago
Oh, thanks. I'm not really with it at the moment.

Oh, hey, I found one!

I think that the LHC is going to produce some fantastic info about the origins of the universe, and may even produce Higgs boson particles, but I think that the idea that it will produce "mini" black holes or somehow create a small scale Big Bang are sort of reactionary. However, if that were to happen then I definitely agree with gmoon that at least humanity will get a final answer on the whole God thing... I hope we can derive the Grand Unified Theory with the data we collect from the LHC but even if we don't, one thing will be perfectly clear: Human beings are f*&%ing awesome!

Hmm, if it does create a blackhole and swallow the earth, then the second cosmological question answered will be on the God/No God debate... ;-)
