Laptop DVD Drive to External? Answered

I recently salvaged a dvd drive from a broken laptop. I was wondering what I would have to do/ buy to convert it to an external usb one. Here are some pics of the plug in part and the specs.
PS(I do not want to buy one of those kits.)

yes. SATA hard drives and DVD drives use the same cables. It is cheap enough that if it doesn't work your not out much. For the future I would look for USB 3 since it is so much faster, but for a start this would work good.

The connectors looks to be a standard SATA. If that is the case all you need to do is plug in a SATA drive cable and a power cable. However, sometimes laptop makers don't use the standard connectors for things but instead design their own. This makes it necessary to buy any kind of expansion or replacement from them and they can copyright or patent the connector. The best thing to do is buy a SATA to USB converter with cables, the same type that works for a hard drive, and try it. Anybody who works with computers should have one of those anyway so you can use hard drives as external drives.
