The screen is illuminated from within by a bulb behind the screen - it could be dead.

If you shine a torch directly into the screen in a darkened room, it lights up a small area around it. This will tell you whether the screen is displaying anything but dark, or not displaying anything at all.

Replacing the backlight is not a trivial task, however.
