I'm sort of sleep deprived right now, so feel free to disregard my comment completely if I sound crazy. Maybe instead of trying to make a modded keyboard that works with the same electronics as the laptop keyboard, you could cut out the laptop's keyboard and completely ignore those electronics. Then maybe you could fit it with a modded keyboard that would still have to plug into one of the USB ports, but would fit in the normal keyboard slot. Haha, I'm pretty tired so I don't know if that made any sense.

What did you have in mind? Modern laptop keyboards are pretty amazing feats of engineering and manufacturing; I doubt whether it's possible to do anything close to similar "custom", unless you didn't have much more in mind than painting the keycaps. they're also typically just thin-film switch matrix things, with no actual electronics till you get deeper inside the laptop. That means a potential replacements will have to have the same characters in the same "electrical" layout of the switches. Finally, mechanical construction of bits like the underside of the keys themselves tends to vary quite a lot, even on keyboards from the same manufacturer. Grr.
