Here's how I describe Instructables in 10 seconds: The world's biggest Show & Tell, where people share what they do and how they do it.

I've found this to be the best way to quickly introduce new people to the site and give them a sense of what's there. The phrase "Show & Tell" reminds people about the best part of grade school: there's entertainment, inspiration, and usually some unexpected, surprising, and most importantly fun learning.

Instructables falls into a broad category I've started calling the "Learning Lifestyle" - it's the way creative, curious people approach life. Just like a grade school Show & Tell, a Learning Lifestyle can be entertaining, inspirational, and educational. The best kind of education is serendipitous -- you simply keep your eyes open to opportunities, and are excited and surprised by what you find.

The Instructables community lives the Learning Lifestyle. We have Instructables on subjects our community is passionate about, and because people's passions are so diverse, the Instructables they produce are inherently entertaining, inspiring, and surprising. It's great when someone can search the site and find a specific useful project, but I absolutely love it when someone is inspired by the projects on Instructables to create -- and share! -- their own projects. The Learning Lifestyle is all about inspiring viral creativity.

So, the next time your run into someone else with a Learning Lifestyle (usually easy to spot; I always find them to be the most interesting people at parties), invite them to join you at the World's Biggest Show and Tell.

While I agree that it would be easy to classify Instructables as a "how-to" community, that term just barely scratches the surface. It is so much more. ewilhelm nailed it by calling it a 'learning lifestyle'. The site satiates curiosity, encourages creativity and personal expression, and offers an easy way to engage others. I'm hooked. In the same visit recently, I learned how to make my hot water heater more efficient right before learning how to transfer songs back from my ipod to itunes! Where else is that possible?

Instructables is too hard to describe adequately in such a short span of words, but I tend to call it an "online how-to community," filled with people who post their personal/homemade projects. It really is a home for people with a "learning lifestyle," and it's growing at an astonishing pace all on its own! Although, it always feels good to get someone to join (ie your physics teacher and her husband, tech teacher, and other various friends that think laser cutters and tesla turbine-powered skill saws are cool).
