Most likely there are plastic nubs or pegs that snap into the holes in the grate. Kinda like velcro for the fan, no need for magnets, it would slide off anyway if moved.

Yeah, but that would be difficult to make into a DIY version.

Maybe pegboard with a knex yellow rod that is split at the end. The ball can squeeze through the hole and lock in place when it expands back out. Anyone do the LEGO laptop cooler yet?

Saw that on Giz (or was it lifehacker?) It would be extremely easy...just use a couple magnets to hold the fan in place. Unless, of course. you're the type the freaks out about any magnets nearby. In that case, you could just use something like a paper clip.
