I'd like to see an original Cooper do this, I drove one the other day and it was the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel, second gear everywhere :D
Hmm, well (to quote Nigel Hinchliffe) on the commentator "what a t-" This whole thing is interesting but really tinned meat-flavoured. Still I seemed to have guessed right on the course being weighted towards handling around corners. - Did someone say "we can't lose as it's good publicity regardless (for either marque)"?
A tight, twisty circuit I can forgive, in the interests of it not being just a series of drag races between bends, but running in opposite directions? This wasn't a race, it was two time trials over effectively different tracks. Le sigh.
Now Top Gear, they know how to put together a completely unfair and imbalanced challenge between different modes of transport and make it seem like a nail-biting challenge :)
Topeka's had some torrential rains these last couple of weeks...On Wednesday, this photo was on the front page of the local paper. The guy was driving his 1973 Mini through a flooded intersection (um, stoopid much?) when it was picked up and started drifting. According to the caption, he "floated it to the curb" which held it still so he could get out and wade to safety. No word on the condition of the car.
Now what would really be fun is if they raced a new BeemerMini against a new 911, then raced an old pair, say, 1963? Get a couple of geezers to drive 'em while they're at it...
I saw a woman do this in a citroen or some such by accident, she didn't notice she was floating through the puddle until the water was churning all round and the engine was revving more and more as the wheels weren't on anything. Amazingly it floated another ten feet under momentum and the wheels touched down... She seems entirely nonplussed by the little marine voyage...
This sounds like it could be the makings of a rather good Top Gear-style challenge.
Buy a new Mini for, say, 15000GBP, and then buy a Porsche 911 for the same price and race those. Then maybe get an old-style mini for 1000GBP and a Porsche for the same money, give that a go :)
Being rear-engined the Porsche will probably handle worse around a track with short straights and a lot of corners. But the whole thing is rather vague.

I remember keeping up with a 911 with a Honda Civic on back roads....the car just wasn't made for that kind of terrain
