Minty boost solar power question Answered

Hey everyone.

Recently I went to The reject store (like a dollar store where things an cost over a dollar) and saw some garden lights selling for $2 each. I bought 4 of them. :D they come with one AAA battery each with 1.2V could I Purchase a mintyboost and modify the lights so they each charge up a set of four AAA batteries, with can detach and be used to charge USB device with the internal battery storage that was charged  by the solar panels, or would it have to be 2 AA's?

Thanks for the help! :D

You won't be able to run a Minty Boost on a solar cell alone. In order for the Minty boost to boost the 1.5V of a AA battery it has to use up amperage from the battery to do it. The small solar cells on those garden lights don't put out much amperage. I'd be surprised if they could offer 10mA. Now you could hook up both the rechargeable battery and solar panel to the unit but you may or may not get more charge time out of it then a regular AA battery.

Problem is the solar panel is very small and just barely enough to trickle charge that battery in there. Under ideal conditions the panel is just able to get the battery back to a full charge after a full nights use. Only because the few LEDs in the light are not using very much power to start with. Over time the battery will get drained enough that the panel can't fully charge it and eventually you'll have a dead battery.

The Minty boost will put a much larger load on the battery and the panel won't be able to keep the battery charged at all. What little it can do probably won't make a noticeable difference.

Now if you take 10 or more of those panels and wire them in Parallel to a single battery and place that into the minty boost you may have something. But once the battery runs down it will still take a day or more for the panels to get it fully charged again.

I think it would work if u use 4 rechargeable aa(a) batteries and a 5v transistor
