My gunpowder does not work? Answered

Hello,

I wanted to craft small salute shells with my DIY gunpowder. I used 7,5 spoons KNO3, 1,5 spoons sulfur and 1 spoon charcoal. Then I put the whole mixture into my Lego ballmill with marbles. After 10 - 12 hours I took the mixture out and ignited 1 gramm. It just sparkled, I had to light it more times because it didnt fully burn. Anyone know what I did wrong? The engine of the lego ballmill is really strong and it is turning fast.

Sorry for my bad english

Thank you very much

Kind regards

Sami

OK standard gun powder is a mix of “3:2:1”;
that is 3 parts potassium nitrate 2 parts carbon and one part sulfur (By weight
not volume).

Change the mix and you change the burn
rate.

Change the size of the carbon granules,
the potassium nitrate granules, or the sulfur granules, and you change the burn
rate. (C for course and F for fine.)

This is called the F.C. rating; as an
example pistol black powder is FFF and cannon powder is CCC. To explain this
clearly would be a book.

The mix you made I have no idea what
that is; there is no FC rating and you used volume not weight.

Always measure by weight; not volume, if
you use volume the density of the powder packing changes the weight and your
formula. As an example 1 cup of C carbon weighs twice the weight of F carbon.

I make my own gunpowder and my own bullets;
gunpowder behaves differently in open air verses in a chamber, so it might be
how you are testing it. In open air gunpowder burns slow, as in a chamber gunpowder
burns in an instant.

Hello,

thank you very much for your answer! Are you completly blind? That would be really dangerous if you craft gunpowder and make bullets with them. Im using really fine ingredients. I made a little test and added some alcohol and let it drie. The mixture burnt faster. After it burned completely there was a little sulfur bubble. I think I add alcohol to the whole mixture. I will post a video if the gp works.

Thank you very much for your answer!

Kind regards

You are welcome.

Legally blind is less than 600 vision in your good eye or less than 20 degrees field of vision in your good eye.

I have total loss of central vision of left eye and it doesn't track with my right eye. So my left eye looks off to the left as my right eye looks at what I am looking at.

In my right eye I have 10 degrees field of vision with 20/45 vision in that 10 degrees.

Then my brain gets involved and puts the image I see from my left and right eye together and it is like trying to see the world with a kaleidoscope.

That is why the funky glasses.

Oh... Im really sorry for you. Is it difficult to live with only one eye? I have a 3D Printer and maybe I could print you something that could help you. If I can do anything for you, just reply me.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Kind regards and a nice weekend

Sami

Sorry about the sloppy writing. I am blind and use the handy cap access on my computer so I write in word, copy and past in Instructables. Then Instructables Fs up my reply. you should see how much editing I must do just to write an Instructable.

You've had a lot of good advice already,
but I would like to add that it would be a good idea to grind each
ingredient to powder in a pestle and mortar (separately), before starting to mix them together.

Smaller pieces = closer contact = faster reaction.

I used a mixer to grind the ingredients separately. The mixture is a really fine powder now. Adding alcohol helped and it is burining faster now. I dont need a extreme fast reaction for my crackling star launcher. Thank you!

You need the righ mix - yours if far from the right ratios.
You can not use any type of wood for proper black powder, check Wikipedia for some historic references.
Also your mill should be running very slowand I hope you do use ceramic balls and not steel balls as the slightest spark will ignite the mix.
It is best to mix seperately and only to mix the final stuff without balls o in a good sized shaker.

Your english a very good for someone from germany. I found a instructables that looks like it is going to work but its not going to be cheap. https://www.instructables.com/id/Gunpowder/

There were some other videos online including this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O4gybnrORE I found this one particularly helpful because it it used materials that could be found in almost any store. I hope its going to still snow in germany so you guys over there will still have a snowy winter.

Thank you very much but I already have Armstrongs Mixture and it is too dangerous for me because it is too sensitive. Thanks for the answer!
