Unlike pieces of paper with rubber-stamps on them, a digital storage unit doesn't show what's in it. It doesn't even have to be located close to source. Who knows, but they certainly should have taken more care.

Have they checked down the back of the sofa? That's where my pendrive was.

It is hard to say whether this is incompetence, stupidity, or just plain insider corruption....it boggles the mind.
