Number of "views" of my Instructable differs when I am logged out. Answered

When I view my latest Instructable (while I'm logged in) I see a number of views (# 1092).
When I log out and view the Instructable again, the numner is now 628.

Indeed, it is very strange.  My single instructable shows 3445 views when I am logged in but one of my friends logged to his account and it shows only 2788 (both pages were loaded simultaneously!).  VERY STRANGE!

You're probably hitting different servers, which won't necessarily be synchronously updated.

Huh.  I never noticed that before.  I will say, when two different users are logged in, it should give the same number.

The difference between logged in and logged out are such:
When you're logged in, you're looking at a live, updated version of the page.
When you are logged out, you're looking at a cached version of the page.

I hope that helps clear the air.

What is the interval between cache updates?  Minutes?  Days?  Months?

I'm pretty sure it's every night...but I'll double check and get back to you when I'm back at work.

Ah, only once a day, then.  Thanks, Matt!  I would have thought a slightly more frequent flush (say, an hourly cron job, with just a list of known changes as input) would be better for the users.

I'm not sure if I understand your suggestion, but when I meant logging in / logging out, I meant on The Instructables site, not the Internet...

When he says cached it means it gets a snap shot of the number of views once every, say; week.

When you see the lower one, you're probably seeing this cached version.

You probably meant to reply to StumpChunkman, not to me.  My question was directed at him.

You're right, but I thought this message would go one level up as well as it is a reply to a reply. Apparently not.

Matt will get the e-mail, but every other person (including myself) reading this will be confused because your reply is incongruent with my preceding comment.  Threading exists for a reason.

Are, you are forgetting to factor in the special secret views that only members are allowed to know about.

Don't spread it around, or we'll have loads of people trying to join...

Same thing with my instructables.

I believe the member profile of whoever created the instructables keeps the views total up-to-date in almost real-time whereas when you see your instructable in a graphical search it's lagging behind. Thus, the longer an instructable is around the farther behind the instructable stats for other's appears.
