Package installation Answered

We are running Ubuntu 11.1     We like it.   Can someone tell me how to install a package we have downloaded and saved to a disk.

Please make it simple. There must be a way to install without going to dos.

First, if it is a .exe file, that is a Windows program and it won't work in Ubuntu without using a program named "Wine" which is a whole 'nuther pain in the tookas.
If you will tell me the name of the program you want to install and whether it is on a CD/DVD or the hard disk drive, I can probably tell you how to install it.

Alright, that's easy enough.
Create a new folder on your desktop and name it whatever you want.
Locate the file you want to open (the icon should look like a wrapped package)
Right click on the package and in the pop-up window, select open with "Archive Manager"
When the Archive Manager opens select "Extract" and then in the pane, browse to the desktop folder you created and select it.
When the extraction is completed close the Archive Manager and go to your desktop and open the folder you created, all the files will be in there.
You can move the folder to wherever you like afterwards.

Look for the "package manager" - I think its called Synaptic. Point it at your file.
