Mythbusters did a section on a RubeGoldburg once, but I can't remember exactly why they did it LOL I just remember that is was extremely frustrating for them to get it to work all the way to the end.

You should have seen the show. They had MAJOR problems getting that contraption to work :-)

There was an old BBC2 short film called Chain Reaction, very much like this but longer (5-10 minutes) and larger (it filled a warehouse floor).
I'm sure it's downloadable somewhere, but they also turned it into a Honda advert many years later.

Definitely a great challenge!
But I also foresee spin-offs, how NOT to do it videos of frustrated folks smashing their setups :-)
