RE CHROMING ZINC ALUMINIUM Answered

I am looking for info on how to restore zinc aluminum car parts . like the automobile horns they tend to oxidize AND do not stand up to the Chemical's when re chroming. I be-leave that there is a process that will give them, a coating that can be used that will take the chroming posses

IMHO getting chrome finnish will be extremely difficult.
Due to the alloy composition the normal galvanising won't work too well.
Back in the day I did the restauration as follows:
Remove all loose and flaky stuff with a stiff brush, using some degrease can help if there is oil or grease on the parts.
Clean with stainless steel wire brush (should be a new one to prevent conamination with foreign metals or dirt).
You want a brush that is not too hard so you won't cause any bad scratches on the metal.
The fun part is now to use fine sandpaper followed by a nice polish to get a mirror like finnish (where possible).
Now clean all surfaces with acetone and make sure you leave no fingerprints - gloves are a good idea here ;)
Pack if clean plastic foil and give away for chrome plating.
Otherwise you use a good varnish to cover and protect your finnish as chances are the chrome finnish will interact with the alloy over time and just corrode again.

Hi Downunder35
Yes it is very difficult the chroming tends to destroy the the part. I had some chromed & they treated it with a coating to take the chrome but i do not know what it was called. i think if it could be sprayed with a coating & then polished up it should work OK , but what could it be sprayed with ?
