Recent Feed Page Answered

We have heard your feedback loud and clear, and we will be bringing back an easy way to see all recently published instructables. This requires some dev time because we changed things under the hood and need to do a little work to re-create this page. We hope to have it back shortly.

We appreciate your patience as we continue refining the site after this release.

Update:

The recent feed has been released and can be found at this link:
https://www.instructables.com/feed/recent/

You can also find a link to it on your feed page.

Thank you for enabling the recent functionality once more, but could you also make it so it is not necessary to log in for access to it? There's several good arguments against this being a login-necessary-functionality all over different threads on this topic which I will not repeat for sake of brevity.

The community pages are also quite hidden by only being accessible via the main topics instead of through the homepage. I get that this - in theory - makes each subpart of the community pages cleaner, and more focused on one section / topic, but anyone with sime forum experience will tell you that won't work. The older version which was sorted by newest topic first was definitely better, and coupled with a decent search function would be all that was needed.

At least add a separate forum for general feedback like this thread with a button to access it. Every time I want to return here I have to try to remember how I got here the first time. And it wasn't easy.

So when is the "All" button going to show back up in the very top left next to the house icon? I'm sure every single instructable user is still waiting for it...

It will not be showing up there. It is now a link on your "feed" page which you can find on the top right of the screen.

@Randofo, ok so it is now 2 months, people are still asking for the recent button to be on the general non-login home page, all recent, as in chronological order, can you confirm this is still being worked on or tell us that it is not happening. At this point, either way, is good just have the decency to tell us what to expect, please.

The button is not coming back for non-logged in users. These changes were made so that when people come in through search (i.e. non-logged in users) they get a better experience. For instance, if you are searching for pancakes, you likely do not want to find sewing and car maintenance projects, but other things you can cook. The overwhelming majority of our traffic uses the site in this manner.

Our thinking is that if people stick around and dive deeper into the site, they will then discover these other areas, create an account and be able to browse more broadly.

Will you also be fixing the bugs that currently mean I have to clear my cache and cookies *every* time I want to look at almost any part of the site?

I'm still having the same issue. Firefox and Edge.

Best fix I have at the moment is to log out and in occasionally.

Inconvenient, I know.

What browser are you using? Are you getting any particular error messages? What is happening before you decide to refresh things?

I'm using Firefox (up to date).
I get no error messages, I just click on discussions, drafts, inbox etc and get sent directly to the front page.

Interesting update: my browser automatically updated a few minutes ago, and this is the first time in weeks that I haven't had to delete my cache & cookies to reply to a comment.

Well... let me know if it that fixes it or it keeps happening. Honestly, this should have been fixed a few weeks ago and (after some investigation) this is the only known instance of it being reported since then.

Still happening on both my Windows/Firefox laptop and I just had to clear cookies & cache on my Android/Chrome phone to be able to post this reply.

I have the same problem, clear cookies works, but re-login also seems to do the trick.

Is it just me or is the “all instructables” button not working? I’m assuming this was the magic button to see all of the recent and featured ‘ibles that we have been missing so much. I can see ‘ibles from people I’m following but that’s it.

Why isn't the Recent button on the home page.
No one will be able to find it if you don't put it back on the main page.
Plus why don't you go back to the home page any more when you hit the Instructables icon at the top right hand corner of any page you have open.

It worked twice, but then stopped. It now requires you to login, which is not going to happen, I used to use this site multiple times a day viewing the site on my works computer or other "guest" computers or public wifi. I will not login using personal information on any of those systems. I may try again in a couple of months to see if anything changes but until then I have already found other sites which occupy my time. Shame.

How to view "All Recent" without signup.
Go to https://www.instructables.com/feed/ and click "All Recent"

It would be nice if a direct link to "All Recent" was on the main page. Easy to find for new people and long time lurkers, without signing up or using work around.
Also a link to this community section. I didn't know it was here until I was googling about the "all recent" page not working.

Long time All Recent page lurker.

Work around seems to have stopped working for me.
You now have to signup and you have to login to view All Recent :(
I think this is a step backwards in the function of the site.

I am currently sitting on a project (rather than posting it) as I believe posting it now would deprive it of viewership it'd get with the recent page.

I am awaiting the recent page's return.

To the techs at Instructables I have been a paid member for 10 years and have truly enjoyed your site. This latest release has taken away most of the pleasure I would get by going through the site page by page, or selecting a topic and searching for that one project that would peak my interest. Now that I am retired I have more time for projects and checking out your site. The problem is that it is no longer as easy or enjoyable to look at it.
If possible could you set it so those that prefer to old interface would still be able to use it.
I would appreciate a reply. Thank you, and thank you for your time.

I used to visit at least daily, usually multiple times. When the recent list disappeared, I quit visiting. For those who like to see a variety of topics, it helps inspire a lot of different projects. Glad to hear it's coming back. If it doesn't, or if it goes away again, I likely won't return to the site unless I come across a link elsewhere. Don't understand why it was changed.

I have been an Instructable enthusiast since 2007 and look forward to visiting this site every day (sometimes multiple times daily). Please restore the "Recent Instructables" option ASAP! It fills my very strong need to explore eclectically, helping me to find inspiration, make seemingly unrelated connections, and generate new ideas. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who uses Instructalbes this way.

I’m glad you’re bringing back your previous way to see the instructables. I enjoyed exploring the projects and getting inspiration for new projects of my own. Changing (and limiting) how we see the new projects seems to me like you were saying to your members and fans, “yeah we let you look at everything before but now you’ll only see what we want you to see.”
Allowing people to share their creations (and showing others how they did it) WITHOUT restrictions is one of the things that kept me returning time and again. I would have been very sad if I’d had to go to a new Maker page.

Despite all this negative feedback I have to admit that the re-design does actually look quite good and intuitive to use. So this update is MUCH better than the last big update two years ago and I'm glad you learned from your mistakes. Cheers to whoever implemented lazy-loading for the images, that is really helpful for browsing on mobile.

The most annoying thing was the removal of the recent page, but you're already about to fix this. The other thing I'm missing is the general community button. Although I do not use it often (and I'm sure your statistics indicate similiar other user behavior), it is important for this general kind of feedback. Can't you just put a "Projects" and "Community" button on the start page, too? The projects button could take you to the "Recent" page like it used to.

Brilliant, that's good news, I have a dozen sites set up on my browser startup and instructables was always my first page. I've missed it this last couple of weeks, I just hope it is as easy to navigate again really soon.

Thanks for listening, and bringing it back.

If you could, put a big stickynote on the webpage coders monitor that says "Don't Break 'recent' feature with new code". That way we can avoid doing this again in a year or two.

Thank you, that is appreciated.
Though in the future, before such wide-reaching changes go into effect, maybe get a small test audience of a handful of active users and grant them testing access to the site at the Testing Environment, QA Environment or at the latest at the Staging Environment development stage before deploying the site to Procution, just in case there was an oversight like this.
Maybe add a public bug tracker where bugs and feature request can be published by users, just so can get additional external opinions.
Or if you can see it, make a quick study over a week or two and see how often which site feature is used to determine its importance. In this case, how often was the "Recent", "Featured" or "Community" page called directly, how often was it called from the front page, and how often were other features used similarily.
You know, understanding the users needs and wants a bit better.

Yeah, I'm also disappointed to see /recent gone. That's how I browsed the site; enjoying the variety of projects that I would likely not be exposed to if browsing by category. I look forward to seeing the return of /recent. Thanks in advance!

How about you DO NOT CHANGE WHAT WORKS before you know how to bring it back? Just bring the "all recents" back. Or roll back all the "improvements" you did (which where none...).

I had been going through the "Recent" and "All Catagories" browse options every night for several months, trying to review posted content in "All Categories" in chronological order. This has let me find many topics I'd not thought of before, discovering and following people with incredable talent. In hopes of helping clean up the site, this pastime also gave me a chance to flag incomplete instructables (such as youtube video only instructables where the youtube channel no longer exists). I had gotten 2/3rd of the way through, according to the page counter, when the update removed this pastime as an option. I sincerely hope these search/browse options are recreated. I'll start over once "Recent" and "All Categories" are added back as option.
