Request for an Instructable
Having had recent problems myself (I wasted two tins getting this one right) , and having just seen a can of spray-paint being used badly in an 'ible photo, I think it would be useful if somebody with some skill in the area could produce one or both of these Instructables:
How to get a good finish with aerosol paint
and
How to use an air-brush properly

I'm guessing you were referring to that fighting stick thing made of pvc, right? Unfortunately my whole spray painting setup is 1200 miles away.

Following the directions is always a good start.
Hold 25cm away from surface, even strokes, turn can upside down to clear nozzle after standing or if flecking occurs, allow for drying before recoat. Fine sand paper for finishing and between coats.
Hold to close and rush = dribbles
Hold to far away = cloudy and loss of gloss level, flecking may also occur.
Should keep going, but don't feel like high jacking Firebert010 ible.

I know about the instructions, but the ones on the can I bought are minimalist at best. Plus, there are always hints and tips that regular sprayers will know about and other people don't.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for: Mirror finish instructable.
It's more about techniques after the spray painting. Unless your willing to do the "apres work", I wouldn't look to spray cans for a professional finish. But the other painting instructions should get you close. All I can add is more coats of less paint are preferable to fewer, heavier applications.
There are some specific really high-gloss clear-coat sprays you can buy, too (I wouldn't use those unless you have a dust-free environment.)

I am SO on that. (the spraypaint one)
When I get home today, hopefully someone won't beat me to it. (if not, I will hoping for a feature in return for my service =P)
