I was thinking of a water exploration bot. First I would encase the bot in plexiglas, attach a microphone, webcam and lights to it. This way I could hook the webcam up to my laptop along with the microphone so I could see what is going on below. For movement I was thinking of either dropping it in the water till it hit the bottom and could walk, or attaching propellers to the plexiglas case that would probably be sealed with liquid nails or something like that. Feedback appreciated!

. If you plan on using the 'bot in lakes and/or rivers, Kira_K's tether idea is almost a must. You'll need a lot of power for the lights and it will come in very handy if the 'bot gets hung up on a submerged tree limb. Try to find something with neutral buoyancy. . If you ever plan on working on it after you get it built, I wouldn't use glue to hold/seal at least one panel of the enclosure.

Well, according to iRobot's web site. The controller (micro-controller) uses C and C++. However, it looks like iRobot have great support for stuff like programming. I think as long as you stay within reason, programming shouldn't be that hard. Remember, there are lots of information on the web (mans greatest tool) that can help you do this!

I like this idea. I see a lot of potential in having a low cost underwater explorer bot. I would leave it tethered for several reasons, one if something were to go wrong you could just pull it back up, two wireless signals only go so deep as most of your signal strength would just be reflected of the waters surface, and last is simplicity. For propulsion I would go with propellers that are independently operated for steering and forward/backwards motion. I would also use an air ballast tank to keep the bot at whatever level from the bottom you want. Another thing I would add would be like some claws to pick stuff (recover) up stuff. Other than that it is just up to your imagination. Good Luck!
