Search coil anatomy? Answered

I am in the process of making a metal detector and have come to the point of making the search coil. My question is about the contruction pattern, wire gauge, wraps, and housing material (mostly what not to use).

Plus 1 to Steve on what he said.

All I can add, is larger diameter coils can detect deeper objects.

BTW I have a solution for metal detecting in National Parks.

Too many other parameters to comment. Generally wire gauge doesn't matter at all - the smaller the better in most cases. The geometry depends on the metal detector design - some use one coil, some two, some three. Round coils are much easier to wind than square
