Seeking PROP GUN info: from a gunsmith, metalsmith and/or fellow prop builder Answered

Hi all,

I've been asked to design a "Hellboyish BIG handgun" to shoot "holy water dart bullets at demons" for a show that is in pre-production. I've decided that rather than the usual "glue a bunch of stuff onto an existing toy gun and spray paint it" prop build I would like to actually make a functional metal prop gun (functional in that all the parts should work like a real gun but of course not actually shoot real bullets).

Soooo.... my plan is to design the look of it and then work with a gunsmith to design the functionality; get the parts milled and then assemble it. Simple, right?

Anyway, I'm not sure where to start so I'm calling out to the Instructables community. Has anyone built their own guns from scratch? Does anyone have advice? Right now I'm looking into companies that customize existing guns but what I really need is to start from scratch.

All advice appreciated!

you could try modding the externals on a nerf maveric.

There are a lot of non firing replicas that work available on the market, made both in metal and resin. Good idea to have something copyable, that way you dont have to mess up your good prop during stunts etc...

I would check with the rulings on prop guns, some times there are rulings as too what can look liek a gun and what can't.

A revolver is going to defiantly the hardest thing to make, do to the complexities of the chamber, hammer, and trigger.

I don't know about making it actually shoot but Indymogul did  a how to video for a Samaritan-

If you want to make an accurate Samaritan then the RPF is the place to go! Lots of people have made one, some have the receiver open up but I haven't seen any that shoot. Just do a search at http://www.therpf.com
