Suggestion for a sorting tweak in Answers Answered

Like many of us who lurk in Answers a lot, I find the Recent view to be the most useful in identifying active questions to address. Unanswered view just displays everything that hasn't been marked Answered, but in no discernable order, which makes it less handy for finding questions that are still "live".

The issue I have with Recent view is that when a question is flagged for human review prior to posting, it gets held up until an admin OK's it, but then it posts based on the original submission date rather than the actual posting date. This can lead to questions getting buried way down the list (depending on how long the human review took and how many other questions posted in the interim). This can lead to perfectly good questions getting missed by most of the Answerers, and therefore not receiving the same level of feedback as the ones that were not flagged for review.

If the sort were modified to use the actual posting date instead of the submission date, it would level the playing field and ensure that all the questions have an equal chance of receiving the best feedback available.

Yeah, I know, this is minor in the grand scheme of things, but I think it would be a significant improvement for the user experience of those who it would impact.

Thanks very much. You think if I send Eric a case of beer and some Pop-tarts, he'll implement it?

.  Can't hurt. You might want to include a package or two of that no-refrigeration-required salmon.
Rachel, the Señor Software Developer, might be a better target for bribes. Looks like hats and lingerie are high on her list.

One should never give lingerie to a woman one has never met. It can lead to misunderstandings. And restraining orders.
Hats, I could work with.

Agreed

And without wanting to hijack your topic:

-the same happends with instructables that go in a moderated contest. They use the date they were posted and not the date they were released to the general public. If you do this over the weekend it's sure that you'll be on page 3 or 4 of recent.

- I also had a little problem with the "answers" quicklink you can put next to "you" and that stuff, this link automaticly brings you to "answerd" questions but I want to see recent ones :)

Sorry for the hijacking but I felt that these problems didn't deserve anther forum topic.

Good points. I don't think you're hijacking my topic, BTW, just pointing out additional sorting concerns.

I see your point about the contest entries, especially if you are hoping for a lot of views to keep your entry near the top of the "most viewed" list. Entries that are prominently displayed in "recent" would get more casual views than ones that are harder to find.
That said, at least we know going in that the contest entries are all moderated, so we have some degree of control over it. We could, for example, just wait and submit the 'ible on Monday to avoid getting lost in the backlog of weekend entries. Or sub it on Friday in the hopes that the mods will clear it before the weekend, which would get you more exposure until the weekend entries post.
Questions may or may not get moderated, so it's harder to anticipate. Although if you sub a question called "Murder Death Poison Gun Explosive Kill-o-Rama" or conversely, "huh?" you can pretty much count on waiting a while. ;-)

The Answers link from Customize would be more convenient if it defaulted to "recent" or was <gasp> user-definable, but I consider that a minor annoyance. It doesn't really affect anything about how Answers works, just adds a few extra mouse-clicks per day. It would be nice to have more options there, though.

Thanks for the feedback!
