TV Lift Ideas Please Answered

Hello Instructables Community,

Looking for ideas on a TV lift. I have a workshop/shed/mancave that has 2 floors. What I'd like to do is frame an opening in the second storey floor for a TV to move through between the first and second floors.

Framing the hole is the easy part (licensed carpenter). The part that I need help with is getting the TV to move up and down. I would like it to work with either a wall switch or button on a harmony remote or something.

My first thoughts went to cables and pulleys with a winch of some kind, then a garage door opener turned vertical, then gear racks and pinions ... I don't know what to use for the motor or controls. Would love to hear any ideas!

Appreciate the brainstorming help!

Depends on your needs, but I'd guess that you'd be better off with a smaller TV in the space that isn't set for sitting and watching for a long time. When I've seen clever systems like that they're often left in one place because changing positions is too annoying.

Ok. I'll be the first to ask the obvious question. Why not buy another TV for upstairs? The money you spend on the project will cost more than the TV right? I love cool projects but my checklist always runs the numbers. How about a mirror, periscope type setup?

A garage door opener is pretty much the basis of a "dumb waiter" so I'd follow that vein. I personally would get a bit worried about a TV being moved around so much, but it's not like there are bulbs in them.

How many times did your wife roll her eyes at you? It's ok. We get it!

Haha.... There have been a few rolled eyes but thanks for understanding!... The whole point is to save money. It'll be a 50" TV so 2 will be kinda expensive I have a garage door opener laying around here but am willing to listen to other ideas... Another idea was threaded rod so if the chain or drive shaft of the opener breaks the TV won't crash to the floor.

Ha, I was thinking garage door opener as well! I don't think that you will be able to do this too well without welding a structure between the floors to act as your track. But I really like the garage door opener idea!
